Band 5 Seconds of Summer have spoken out after drummer Ashton Irwin was rushed to hospital from their gig over the weekend.

In an Instagram post shared this morning, the Aussie boy band revealed Irwin, 27, suffered "extreme heat exhaustion" during their Sunday concert in Houston, Texas. 

The band – which consists of Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford and Calum Hood - then had to end their show early due to the medical incident.

"As you may have heard, last night's show ended early due to a medical incident during the show," they wrote in a note posted to Instagram Stories.

"Upon experiencing physical symptoms, Ashton was taken to a local hospital for tests and a medical review. As a result, it was advised Ashton had experienced extreme heat exhaustion."

The band also shared an update on Irwin's health in their post.

"'Thankfully and most importantly, he is feeling okay and recovering well. We apologise to all the fans in attendance for the show being cut short," the band continued.

"In the meantime, please join us in giving Ash the privacy to rest up and get back to full fitness."

5SOS, who are in the middle of their Take Me Home Tour in the US, said they will postpone their Arkansas show due to take place tomorrow night. It is now scheduled for July 26.

"We are so sorry to cause inconvenience to your plans, but we promise for those who can still make it, we will put on the show of your lives," they added.

The band are due to tour Australia later this year, with a scheduled performance at the Sydney Opera House in December.

Since they formed in 2011, 5SOS have reportedly sold more than two million concert tickets worldwide and their songs have reached more than seven billion streams.

They have also won an array of awards including an American Music Award, People's Choice Award, iHeartRadio Music Awards, MTV Video Music Awards and five ARIA Awards.
